BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team got its season started on the right foot with a 7-2 victory on the road Friday night over No. 24 Bowdoin.

Bates (1-0) was strong at the top, winning at the top four positions on the ladder. First-years Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) impressed in their collegiate debuts. O'Brien defeated Bowdoin's Alexa Horwitz 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-8) at the No. 3 position while Manternach won 3-0 (1-3, 11-2, 11-2) at the No. 4 position over the Polar Bears' Natasha Belsky.

Sophomore and 2016-17 First Team All-NESCAC selection Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) had no problem at the No. 1 position, tallying a 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-1) victory over Bowdoin's Lindsey Bindra. Meanwhile junior captain and two-time All-NESCAC selection Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) won 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-3) at the No. 2 position over Tully Ross.

Despite missing four players this fall, Bates showed off its depth with wins at the bottom of the ladder as well. At the No. 7 position, first-year Tiffany Cervantes (New Haven, Conn.) earned a 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 13-11) win over Bowdoin's Hannah Cooke. Sophomores Nubia Beasley-Bartee (Chicago, Ill.) and Issy Hnat (Ridgewood, N.J.) picked up wins, with Hnat making her collegiate debut an exciting one, rallying from a game down to win 3-1 (9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5) at the No. 9 position.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host No. 28 Connecticut College at noon.
