Fiddler, McDonald, Millslagle shine in freestyle races at UNH Carnival

JACKSON, N.H. -- Senior Laurel Fiddler matched her career-best EISA carnival finish, taking 11th place out of 100 women in the women's 15K freestyle race while junior Parker McDonald and senior captain Max Millslagle also notched top-20 finishes in the men's 20K race Saturday at the UNH Carnival.

Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) finished the 15-kilometer course at the Jackson Touring Center in 44:37.8, 2.3 seconds off of 10th-place Abigail Drach of Dartmouth and 18.9 seconds ahead of the 12th-place woman, Dartmouth's Emily Hyde. It is her third straight race leading the way for the Bates women's team.

Senior captain Halie Lange (Brattleboro, Vt.) finished 30th in 47:05.6 and first-year Kaelyn Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) rounded out the team scoring in 35th place at 47:45.7.

The Bates men's team received a pair of top-20 finishes from McDonald (Dillon, Colo.) and Millslagle (Bend, Ore.), the second ever for McDonald and the first for Millslagle, in the men's 20K freestyle race.

McDonald finished the course in 51:57.6, good for 18th place out of 98 athletes, and Millslagle was right behind in 19th place at 52:02.0. First-year Graham Houtsma (Aspen, Colo.) placed 42nd in 54:14.1 to complete the Bates' men's scoring.

Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished with 402 carnival points, good for eighth place out of 16 competing teams. 

Up next for the Bates Nordic team is the UVM Carnival at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt., taking place Feb. 3-4.
