LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 16 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team swept six matches on their way to a 9-0 victory over No. 20 MIT Saturday afternoon at the Bates College Squash Center.
The Bobcats (11-2) continued their late-season surge with a number of convincing wins against the Engineers (15-4) in their penultimate match of the regular season.
Starting at the top of the ladder, senior three-time All-American Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) knocked off MIT's Justin Restivo 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-5) at the No. 1 position. Hatata has now won 12 consecutive matches after Saturday's victory.
First-year Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) continued his outstanding debut season as a Bobcat with a 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-8) win at the No. 2 position over Tyler Finkelstein.
Senior Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) and junior Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) both battled to win their matches in four games. Campbell rallied to beat Vedaant Kukadia 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9) and Nambiar took the final two games of his match to win 3-1 (11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8) over Nikhil Punwaney.
Senior captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) won the first two games of his match before his opponent retired in the middle of game three at the No. 5 position.Â
Sophomore Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) continues to be rock solid at the No. 6 position, sweeping MIT's Avery Lamp 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) on Saturday.
First-year Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) won his match in four games, rallying to beat Peter Griggs 3-1 (5-11, 11-3, 11-0, 11-4) at the No. 7 position.
Sophomore McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) and senior Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) swept their opponents at the No. 8 and 9 positions respectively.Â
Abbott beat Wonjune Kang 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-5) and Ames prevailed 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-4) over Elizabeth Wei.
The Bobcats play their final home match of the season Sunday at 6:00 p.m. when they welcome Tufts to town.
