Women's Squash

No. 16 women's squash wins 8-1 at No. 17 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass -- The No. 16 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team finished up the Amherst Round Robin with a 2-0 record thanks to an 8-1 victory over No. 17 Amherst Sunday morning.

Bates (9-3) swept four matches on Sunday and picked up a pair of dramatic five-game victories against the Purple and White (4-5).

First-years Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) and Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) both earned sweeps in their matches. Polgar defeated Kim Krayacich 3-0 (12-10, 11-4, 11-9) at the No. 1 position and Dunham knocked off Haley McAtee 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-7) at the No. 4 position. 

Sophomore Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) continued her strong weekend with a 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-7) win over Amherst's Priya Sinha at the No. 3 position. Senior co-captain Charlotte Cabot (Dover, Mass.) impressed at the No. 6 position with a 3-0 (11-1, 11-6, 11-4) victory over Katy Correia.

The Bobcats' other senior co-captain, Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.), fell behind 2-0 in her match. But she would not be denied, rallying to win the final three games, taking the match 3-2 (6-11, 3-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7) over Caroline Conway. 

Sophomore Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va.) had the opposite challenge from Dunn in her match. Brooks jumped ahead 2-0 only to see the Purple and White's Emma Crowe rally to take the next two games. Brooks hung tough and prevailed 12-10 in an exciting fifth game to win 3-2 (11-7, 11-8, 3-11, 5-11, 12-10) over Crowe.

Fellow sophomores Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) and Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) emerged victorious in their matches in four games.

Playing at the No. 2 position, Alexova defeated Rachel Ang 3-1 (11-4, 6-11, 11-3, 11-7). Bull played at the No. 8 position and knocked off Jenni Brown 3-1 (11-2, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7) to earn her seond victory of the weekend.

Arjoon, Dunham, Cabot, Bull and Brooks all went undefeated at the Amherst Round Robin.

Next up for Bates is a match at rival Colby this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
