Fiddler, McDonald pace Nordic teams in St. Lawrence freestyle races

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Senior Laurel Fiddler placed 13th out of 109 competitors in the women's 5K freestyle race, while junior Parker McDonald placed 19th out of 109 in the men's 10K freestyle, to lead the Bates Nordic team Saturday as the St. Lawrence Carnival concluded.

In the men's 10K freestyle race, McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) raced to an EISA carnival career-best 19th place to lead Bates to sixth place out of 14 teams in the event. McDonald covered the Mt. Van Hoevenburg course in 29:49.9 for 26 carnival points.

Senior Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) was only three spots away from a career-best finish of his own, as the team co-captain placed 26th in 30:18.7.

First-year Graham Houtsma (Aspen, Colo.) rounded out the men's team scoring in 45th place (31:24.5).

Fiddler's (Crowley Lake, Calif.) 13th-place finish was the second best of her career. She timed in at 15:31.1 over 5 kilometers. Senior Sadie James (Avon, Maine) tied for 26th place (16:03.7 with Mackenzie Rizio of Vermont, and first-year Kaelyn Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) scored her first career carnival points by placing 32nd (16:06.4) to round out the women's team's scoring.

Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to score 437 carnival points for a seventh-place finish out of 17 participating colleges. 

Bates competes next weekend at the UNH Carnival, with Nordic races at Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, N.H., which will also be the site of the NCAA Championships in March.
