Hamilton, James pace Nordic teams in season-opening sprints at St. Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- First-year student Forrest Hamilton finished eighth out of 101 men and senior Sadie James placed led two teammates all in the top 23 out of 95 women, on the first and shortest day of the EISA carnival season for the Bates Nordic ski team.

Competing in the men's 1.5-kilometer classical sprints at Mt. Van Hoevenburg, Hamilton (Shelburne, Vt.) finished in 3:04.17, leading the Bates men's squad to ninth place out of 13 teams competing in the event, between Laval of Quebec and Harvard universities. Senior captain Wade Rosko (Dillon, Colo.) took 29th place in 3:10.93 and junior Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) placed 39th in 3:12.56 to complete Bates' scoring. Junior Connor Gray (Whitefish, Mont.) was Bates' next finisher in 44th place (3:13.43).

James (Avon, Maine) led the Bates women's team to sixth place out of 13 teams, between Colby and Middlebury, in the women's classic sprint, placing 21st in 3:43.33. Senior Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) was 22nd in 3:45.68 and senior captain Halie Lange (Brattleboro, Vt.) took 23rd place in 3:46.19. First-year Kaelyn Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) made her carnival debut by placing 28th in 3:48.57.

The St. Lawrence Carnival concludes Saturday.
