Softball falls to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Hope in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates softball team remained winless Friday in its season-opening trip to the National Training Center, falling 9-1 to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in five innings then losing 9-0 to Hope College in seven innings.

Stevens Point (4-6) scored multiple runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, ending the game via the eight-run rule with its final score of the afternoon.

Katie Uhlenbrauck led the Pointers offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Morgan Johnson went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.

First-year Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) accepted the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned in 3.2 innings. First-year Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.) was tagged for two runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

First-year Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) drove in Bates' run and junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) had two of Bates' five hits in the game, including a double.

Hope College (1-0) used a stellar pitching performance by Kate Laverty and put the game away in the top of the seventh with four runs. 

Laverty allowed four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of work. 

Russo had half of Bates' hits from the top of the order, going 2-for-3 on the day. Sophomore Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) hit a double.

First-year Kylie Martin (Poland, Maine) took the loss, going five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk. Crowley allowed four runs in two innings of relief.

Bates has two days and four games left in its trip. On Saturday, the Bobcats (0-6) face North Central at 1pm and Carthage at 3pm.
