No. 19 women's squash splits a pair of matches at NESCAC Championships

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 19 Bates women's squash team fell to No. 12 Williams in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championships but bounced back to knock off No. 18 Hamilton in the Consolation Round Saturday night.

With the 6-3 win over Hamilton, Bates moves on to play fifth seeded and No. 17 ranked Bowdoin Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

In the quarterfinals against Williams, Bates fell 8-1 despite giving the Ephs all they could handle in quite a few matches.

First-year Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) picked up a victory at the No. 1 spot for the Bobcats, defeating the Ephs' Nicole Friedman 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-9).

Meanwhile Bates lost three five-set heartbreakers. Co-Captains Lauren Williams '16 (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Charlotte Cabot '17 (Dover, Mass.) took their opponents to the wire at the No. 5 and 6 positions respectively.

Williams rallied from two sets down by winning the third set 11-1 and the fourth set 11-6, forcing a deciding fifth set. But Esther Baek defeated Williams 11-4 in the final set to win 3-2.

Meanwhile Cabot also rallied from two sets down, winning 11-4 and 11-9 in the third and fourth sets. But Ellen Coombe held her off in the deciding set by a score of 11-9.

At the No. 9 position, Blair Weintraub '18 (New York, N.Y.) went back-and-forth with her opponent, dropping the first set, winning the second set, dropping the third set, then winning an exciting fourth set 12-10. In the fifth set, the Ephs' Caroline Hogan prevailed by a score of 11-8.

In addition to the three five-set losses, Bates had three four-set losses. Co-Captain Emma Dunn '17 (Bellevue, Wash.) took Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra to four sets at the No. 4 position before falling 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9. First-years Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) and Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va.) also fell in four sets at the No. 3 and 7 positions.

The Hamilton match didn't start until around 10:00 at night but the Bobcats were ready. Alexova was strong again at the top, sweeping Hamilton's Rachel Newman 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 12-10). This time fellow first-year Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) joined her in the win column with a 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-3) win over Lindsay Arader at the No. 2 position.

All three captains also picked up victories at the No. 4-6 positions.

Dunn swept Lillie Simourian 3-0 (12-10, 11-4, 11-5) at the No. 4 position, Williams swept Grace Munschauer 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-7) at No. 5 and Cabot swept Megan Grip at the No. 6 position 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-6).

Meanwhile Weintraub won in four sets at No. 9, a 3-1 (11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7) victory over Marina Hartnick.

Five of the six wins for Bates over Hamilton were sweeps.
