LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- For the second straight day, the Bates Nordic skiing teams impressed at the Williams Carnival. This time they both turned in excellent performances in the 5K Classic Pursuit.
The Bates Nordic and alpine skiing teams combined to finish with 445 carnival points over two days, good for a seventh place finish out of 16 teams.
In Nordic skiing, each competitor's time from Friday's 10K Freestyle was added to their 5K Classic Pursuit time to produce a total time, which in turn generated their final point total. Both Nordic squads came in seventh out of 13 teams.
Junior captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) led the men's Nordic team with a combined two-day time of 40:11.7, good for 24th place out of 68 skiers and 46 carnival points. Nathan Moreau '17 (Falmouth, Maine) came in right behind Millslagle in 25th place with a combined two-day time of 40:34.3 and 44 carnival points. Senior Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) rounded out the men's Nordic skiers who contributed to the team's point total with a two-day combined time of 40:45.8 and 36 carnival points.
The women's Nordic skiers were led over the course of the weekend by senior Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.). Her combined time of 46:49.8 was good for 20th place out of the 65 women in the carnival. She picked up 46 carnival points for Bates. Senior captain Grace Wright (Rutland, Vt.) scored 44 carnival points and finished in 21st place with a combined two-day time of 46:50.6. Rounding out the top three Bobcats from the weekend is junior Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.); she finishes with a combined two-day time of 46:57.9, good for 23rd place and 50 carnival points.
Although she did not contribute to the team's final point total, Sadie James '17 (Avon, Maine), stood out in the 5K Classic Pursuit, finishing in 16:48.3, the fastest time by a Bates women's Nordic skier and the 11th fastest time in the field. Her combined two-day time of 47:15.3 puts James in 25th place overall and fourth on the team. Only the top three two-day combined finishers from the team accumulate carnival points.
The Bates Nordic skiing teams head to Ripton, Vt. for the NCAA Regionals February 26-27.
