Nordic skiing impresses at first day of Williams Carnival

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Laurel Fiddler led the way for the women and junior captain Max Millslagle led the way for the men in a strong performance from the Bates Nordic ski teams at the Williams Carnival on Friday.

According to host Williams College: "No team points have been awarded yet in Nordic as the scores from Saturday when combined with Friday will make up the scoring in the Nordic competition." 

Fiddler '17 (Crowley Lake, Calif.) finished 12th in the women's 10K freestyle out of 71 competitors, crossing the finish line in 29:09.2. After lap one Fiddler was in 23rd place, but she pushed to 16th place after lap two and to 12th place after lap three. She maintained her 12th place standing down the stretch to lead the Bobcats.

Senior captain Grace Wright (Rutland, Vt.) came in 18th place for the women in 29:31.5. Rounding out the top three finishers for the Bobcats was Britta Clark '16 (Ripton, Vt.). She finished in 22nd place with a time of 29:35.3.

On the men's side, Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) crossed the finish line in the 10K freestyle in 23rd place out of 66 racers with a time of 25:27.6. Coming in right behind him in 24th place with a time of 25:33.1 was senior Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.). Rounding out the top three finishers for the men in 26th place was Nathan Moreau '17 (Falmouth, Maine). Moreau finished in 25:49.6. 

The Bates Nordic teams will compete Saturday in the 5K Classic Pursuit starting at 9:00 a.m.
