James, Harrer pace Nordic ski teams in Dartmouth Carnival classical races

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Junior Sadie James and senior Corky Harrer led the way as Bates placed seventh in both the women's 15K and men's 20K classical technique mass start races Saturday, on the only day of Nordic racing at the Dartmouth Carnival at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

James (Avon, Maine) skied the 15 kilometers in 46:25.0, just two seconds behind 12th-place finisher Mattie Watts of Vermont and tied with Vermont's Iris Pessey for 13th. Vermont and Dartmouth had two more skiers tie for 15th place, one second behind James. 

Senior Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.) placed 24th (47:46.0) and senior captain Grace Wright (Rutland, Vt.) came in 26th (47:55.0) to complete the women's team scoring.

Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) led a veteran trio of top performers for the Bates men in 24th place out of 69, with a time of 49:51.9, good for 46 team carnival points and seven NCAA points. Junior captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) was 28th (50:15.2) and junior Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) took 35th (50:35.8).

Bates' alpine and Nordic teams combined to score 474 points and place seventh out of 15 teams at the Dartmouth Carnival. Bates Nordic competes at the Williams Carnival next weekend, Feb. 19-20; the races have been relocated to Mt. Van Hoevenburg in Lake Placid, N.Y.
