MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The No. 16 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team won a pair of matches on Saturday at Wesleyan, defeating the host Cardinals 6-3 and knocking off William Smith later in the day by a count of 8-1.
Sophomore Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va.) won two matches on Saturday to improve her personal record to 6-0 on the season. Her 3-0 (11-4, 11-3, 11-3) win over Wesleyan's Sherly Francois at the No. 8 position was one of six sweeps for the Bobcats (5-1) against the No. 24 nationally ranked Cardinals (2-2).
Bates ran the table at the No. 2-6 positions. First-year Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) continued her impressive start to the season with a 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-1) win over Abigail Smith at the No. 2 position. Fellow first-year Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) beat Alexandra Imperiale 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-2) at the No. 4 position and sophomore Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) earned a 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-4) win over Annie Ferreira at the No. 3 position.
Senior captains Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.) and Charlotte Cabot (Dover, Mass.) continued their early season success with 3-0 wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions respectively. Dunn beat Josephine Russ 11-5, 11-0, 11-3 and Cabot knocked off Alessandra Lampietti 11-4, 11-1, 11-4.
After the relatively close contest with Wesleyan, Bates won in convincing fashion over William Smith Saturday afternoon.
Polgar, Arjoon, Dunham, Dunn, Cabot and Brooks all won again, with Brooks winning in four games and the rest earning 3-0 sweeps. Sophomore Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) joined her teammates in the win column at the No. 1 position, winning in four games (11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5) over William Smith's Gabrielle Fraser.
After dropping a tough five-game contest against Wesleyan's Nina Premutico, sophomore Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) also emerged victorious in the afternoon contest at the No. 7 position. She beat William Smith's Stacy Maceda 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-3) to improve her personal record to 5-1 on the season.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday morning at Wesleyan University when they take on No. 25 nationally ranked Dickinson College at 11:00 a.m.
