WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates Nordic ski team showed strong balance as the Bates Carnival concluded Saturday with a women's 5K and men's 10K freestyle races at Quarry Road Recreation Area.
The Bates women scored 70 carnival points in their event, sixth-most out of 14 squads. Junior Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) led the Bobcats in 20th place out of 79 collegians with a time of 12:54.3. Junior Sadie James (Avon, Maine), who led Bates in Friday's 1.5-kilometer classical sprint, recorded Bates' second-lowest time on Saturday, placing 22nd in 13:00.0. Sophomore Halie Lange (Brattleboro, Vt.) also scored team points for the second day in a row, placing 26th in 13:05.4.
The Bates men's team, meanwhile, was seventh-best out of 14 with 55 points. Sophomore Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) led the Bobcat men in 22nd place with a time of 23:19.5. Junior captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) placed 32nd in 23:51.9, and junior Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) was 35th in 23:56.8 to round out the team's scoring.
Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to place seventh out of 17 teams at the carnival with 414 points, 86 points ahead of eighth-place St. Lawrence. Bates will return to compete at the same venue next weekend in the Colby Carnival.
