Grossman takes 4th place in 10K freestyle at Dartmouth Carnival

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Senior Hallie Grossman tied a career best by placing fourth out of 74 competitors in the women's 10-kilometer freestyle race, leading the Bates Nordic ski teams to a strong showing on the second and final day of the Dartmouth Carnival at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

Grossman (South Burlington, Vt.) finished among the top five for the fourth time in her past five individual races, covering the course in 31:42.3. The Bates women placed fourth out of 13 squads in the event, with sophomore Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine) placing 16th in 32:56.8 and sophomore Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) taking 21st in 33:17.0.

First-year Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) led Bates in the men's 10K freestyle race, placing 19th out of 68 male collegians in a time of 27:41.5. Sophomore Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) was 34th (28:28.2) and senior Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine) was 36th (28:31.6).

Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams scored 401 points to place eighth out of 16 teams at the carnival.

Friday Recap

The Bates men placed a season-best sixth out of 13 squads on Friday in the classical sprint race, led by Michaud's career-high eighth-place finish. First-year Connor Gray (Whitefish, Mont.) came in 30th and Millslagle took 42nd place, one spot ahead of McDonald.

Grossman led the Bates women to fifth place out of 13 squads in the women's classical sprints, placing 13th out of 74. Humphries was 17th and junior Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.) took 19th place to round out the team scoring.

Bates competes at the Middlebury Carnival next weekend, starting with classical races on Friday morning at Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt.
