HUNTINGTON, Vt. -- The St. Michael's Carnival concluded Saturday with a mixed 4 x 3-kilometer classical technique relay race, with the Bates Nordic ski team fielding three squads among the top 20.
The Bobcats' top quartet -- sophomore Sadie James (Avon, Maine), junior Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.), senior Hallie Grossman (South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) -- combined for a time of 39:38.1, eighth-fastest among 33 teams and 4.1 seconds behind the University of Vermont's second quartet.
Junior Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine), sophomore Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine), sophomore Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.) and first-year Connor Gray (Whitefish, Mont.) came in 18th in 41:08.6, and Bates' fourth group -- junior Gracie Wright (Rutland, Vt.), senior Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine), sophomore Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) and first-year Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) -- was 20th in 41:13.6.
Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams scored 391 carnival points to tie with St. Lawrence for seventh place out of 15 teams at the St. Michael's Carnival. The Bobcats compete at the Dartmouth Carnival next weekend, with Nordic races at Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury, Vt.

Grossman had her third straight top-five finish, and her fifth top-10 finish in as many races this season, on Friday in the women's 5K classical technique race at the St. Michael's Carnival.
Grossman covered the Sleepy Hollow 10K course in 17:55.9, fifth-fastest among 72 skiers overall, leading Bates women's Nordic to a season-best third place out of 12 competing teams in the event -- ahead of such rivals as Colby, Dartmouth and Williams.
James placed 12th in 18:22.5 and Fiddler finished 20th (18:42.5) to complete the team's scoring, though Wright was right behind in 21st (18:42.7) and Clark was 28th (19:05.8).
Harrer posted the best individual finish by a Bates man this season, taking 18th place among 67 competitors in 32:55.3. Millslagle placed 22nd in 33:11.8 and McDonald came in 32nd in 33:48.7.
