STOWE, Vt. -- Bates senior Hallie Grossman followed up the best carnival race result of her career on Friday with the second-best of her career on Saturday, placing fifth out of 107 collegians in the women's 10K classical technique race at the UVM Carnival.
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) led the Bates women's team to fourth place out of 13 squads in the event, covering the Trapp Family Lodge course in 33:32.7 for 39 carnival points. Sophomores Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Gracie Wright (Rutland, Vt.) took 14th and 15th places, respectively, in 34:24.3 and 34:29.5 to cap the Bates women's team scoring.
Bates placed 10th out of 13 men's squads in the men's 15K classical race, led by junior Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.), who was out of 93 racers in a time of 44:37.1. Sophomores Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) and Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) came in 38th and 41st, respectively, in 44:54.9 and 45:16.0.
Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to score 410 carnival points to take seventh place out of 16 teams at the UVM Carnival. The teams return to Vermont next weekend for the St. Michael's Carnival, with Nordic races taking place Friday and Saturday at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, Vt.

Grossman, the team captain and a three-time NCAA Championship competitor, led the Bates women's Nordic ski team to fifth place among 13 competing squads in the race, with Humphries and sophomore Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) placing 20th and 21st, respectively, in 15:26.7 and 15:28.0. Bates also had Wright and sophomore Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.) place 24th and 25th, respectively.
First-year Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) led the Bates men's Nordic team in the 10K freestyle race, covering the course in 26:54.1 for 25th place out of 95 racers. Harrer and Moreau finished out the team's scoring in 28th (27:03.8) and 33rd (27:12.2) places, respectively.
