Grossman places career-best fourth in 5K freestyle at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- Senior Hallie Grossman placed a career-best fourth out of 104 competitors on Friday in the UVM Carnival women's 5K freestyle race, covering the Trapp Family Lodge course in 14:40.5.

Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.), the team captain and a three-time NCAA Championship competitor, led the Bates women's Nordic ski team to fifth place among 13 competing squads in the race, with sophomores Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) placing 20th and 21st, respectively, in 15:26.7 and 15:28.0. Bates also had had sophomores Gracie Wright (Rutland, Vt.) and Britta Clark (Ripton, Vt.) place 24th and 25th, respectively.

First-year Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) led the Bates men's Nordic team in the 10K freestyle race, covering the course in 26:54.1 for 25th place out of 95 racers. Junior Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) finished out the team's scoring in 28th (27:03.8) and 33rd (27:12.2) places, respectively.

Bates' alpine and Nordic ski teams combined for 47 carnival points on Friday, for eighth place among 16 teams. The UVM Carnival Nordic competition continues Saturday with the women's 10K and men's 15K classical technique races.
