LEWISTON, Maine – Junior Julia Rice scored off an assist from classmate Maggie Coco in the 99th minute as Bates College women's soccer beat Wesleyan University in overtime, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Russell St. Field.
Rice (Providence, R.I.) registered the golden goal for the Bobcats (4-2-0, 2-2-0 NESCAC) at the 98:39 mark as Coco (Avon, Conn.) lofted a ball over the defense of the Cardinals (0-5-1, 0-2-1 NESCAC) which Rice collected and slotted past the keeper and inside the left post.
Coco sent the ball from just inside midfield, and Rice out-ran two defenders to get the first touch and end the game with just over a minute left in the first 10-minute overtime session.
Bates senior goalkeeper Alyssa Morgosh (Carlsbad, Calif.) made four saves in her second shutout of the season and improved her record to 4-1-0. Wesleyan senior goalie Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass.) stopped five shots in the loss (0-4-1).
Bates won in dramatic fashion for the second consecutive weekend. Last Saturday the team beat Hamilton, 2-1, with a goal from senior Alex Millstrom (Melrose, Mass.) in the 90th minute.
The Bobcats best chance in the second half came in the 56th minute as a shot from first-year Hannah Behringer (Old Lyme, Conn.) went just over the crossbar as she gathered a failed clear at the edge of the box.
About seven minutes later the Cardinals threatened when junior Marisa Yang (Los Gatos, Calif.) came into the box on a breakaway forcing Morgosh to charge off her line and snuff out a shot attempt.
The Cardinals generated the first half's best scoring chance as a shot from first-year Meghan Cunningham (Washington, D.C.) from the edge of the box ricocheted off the crossbar. An ensuing shot attempt from sophomore Tess Daggett-Edenholm (Mercer Island, Wash.) hit off a Bobcat defender.
Wesleyan held slight advantages in the game in shots (15-14) and corners (6-4) while the Bobcats led in shots on goal (6-4).
Next, Bates hosts Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the team's Maine High School Night while Wesleyan hosts Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
