LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College women's soccer head coach Joe Vari will step down from his position, effective March 6. A national search for a new coach will begin immediately.
Vari was appointed the eighth head coach in the 39-year history of the Bates women's soccer program in 2019 and led the Bobcats for six seasons.
"Joe has cared deeply about the student-athletes in this program and has been an important part of our Bates community," said Director of Athletics Stacey Bunting. "We appreciate the time, energy, and professionalism he has brought to the entire department and wish him the very best in his next chapter."
Before joining Bates, Vari enjoyed notable success as head coach at the University of Puget Sound, where he compiled a 39-14-8 record over three seasons. His 2018 team captured the Northwest Conference championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. The campaign culminated with Vari's recognition as the conference's Coach of the Year. He previously spent seven seasons as head coach at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., leading the Lynx to a 75-43-14 record, while also serving as assistant athletic director beginning in 2014.
Vari commenced his collegiate coaching career at Lynchburg College, where he earned a master's degree in counseling in 2006. He also holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Hiram (Ohio) College. A four-year goalkeeper at Hiram, Vari has spent his entire coaching career at Division III institutions.
"I'm really thankful to the current team, alumni, and fellow staff for all of their energy during my time at Bates," Vari said. "The people are the soul of Bates, and that's what separates it from other schools. The future of the program and the department is really bright, and I know that they will reach new heights."
