MIDWAY, Utah -- Bates junior Hallie Grossman and senior Jordan Buetow placed 30th and 40th in their respective classical technique races on Thursday, the first day of Nordic competition at the 2014 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships.
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.), a recent Second Team All-East selection by the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association, raced the 5K women's classical race at Soldier Hollow Resort in 15:09.02, outpacing 31st-place Alice Flanders of Michigan Tech by 3.7 seconds. Alaska-Anchorage's Marine Dusser was 29th at 15:02.5. The result was Grossman's best finish in five career NCAA Championship races.
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), who like Grossman is making his third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, finished the men's 10K classical in 29:39.7. He'll compete in his final race for Bates in the men's 20K freestyle mass start on Saturday, the final day of NCAAs, starting at 10am. The women's 15K freestyle begins at noon.
With the first half of the 2014 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships now complete, Bates stands in 20th place among 22 participating teams.
