CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Junior Hallie Grossman placed 12th among 69 collegians, highlighting the freestyle races for the Bates Nordic ski teams Friday at the Dartmouth Carnival.
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) finished the women's 5K freestyle race in 15:38.8, 12th fastest among 69 collegiate competitors. First-year Sadie James (Avon, Maine) and sophomore Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) were only 0.2 seconds apart from one another, with James 28th in 16:16.0 and McLarney 29th in 16:16.2, rounding out the women's team scoring, with first-year Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine) 31st at 16:17.4.
The Bates men's team was led by senior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.), who covered the 10-kilometer course in 28:02.5, 30th fastest among 69 collegians. First-year Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) and sophomore Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) came in 38th and 39th, respectively, in 28:19.1 and 28:20.6. Senior captain Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), normally the team's frontrunner, did not race.
Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to score 175 points, good for eighth among 16 participating teams.
The Dartmouth Carnival concludes Saturday with women's 15K and men's 20K classic races.
