Nordic finishes up strong weekend at UNH Carnival

JACKSON, N.H. -- Junior Hallie Grossman and senior Jordan Buetow both finished among the top 10 for the second straight day in their respective freestyle races, as the Bates Nordic ski team closed out an impressive weekend at the UNH Carnival at Jackson Touring Center on Saturday.

Bates' alpine and Nordic ski teams combined for 478 carnival points, wedging the Bobcats in sixth place among 16 competing teams, 11 points shy of fifth-place Colby and six points ahead of seventh-place Williams.

Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) matched her career-high carnival showing by placing sixth among 93 skiers in the women's race. She covered the 15K course in 43:19.5, only 1.3 seconds behind fifth-place Emily Hannah of Dartmouth.

First-year Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) placed 24th in 44:54.2, and first-year Tara Humphries (North Yarmouth, Maine) was 28th (45:23.5). Sophomore Gracie Wright (Rutland, Vt.) was close behind Humphries in 30th (45:26.3).

Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) placed ninth out of 90 skiers in the men's 20K race with a time of 50:01.5. Senior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) took 15th place in 50:31.0 and sophomore Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) rounded out Bates' team scoring in 39th place at 52:24.9.
Bates competes in the Nordic portion of the UVM Carnival next weekend, Feb. 1-2, at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt.

Grossman took fifth place overall in the women's 5K classic technique race, and Buetow placed 10th in the men's 10K classic, leading the Bates Nordic ski teams to a strong first day of action at the UNH Carnival.

Bates' men's and women's teams both scored the fifth-most points among 13 Nordic squads on the day. Bates' alpine and Nordic ski teams combined for 243 carnival points, good for sixth place among 16 teams. 

Grossman recorded her first career top-five carnival finish, crossing the finish line in 14:54.5, 0.2 seconds ahead of Bowdoin's Kaitlynn Miller. The only collegians to outrace Grossman on the day comprised two skiers from the University of Vermont and two from Dartmouth.

Humphries placed second for the Bobcats, 21st among 91 collegians, in 15:23.5. Wright rounded out the team scoring in 28th place (15:44.6), with sophomore Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) and first-year Sadie James (Avon, Maine) close behind in 30th and 31st, respectively.

Buetow finished his 10K race in 25:59.3, 10th-fastest among 89 collegians. Woods continued his strong early season with a 22nd-place finish (26:47.8), and senior Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) closed out the team's scoring in 36th place (27.16.1).
