SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The No. 11 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team made it a 2-2 weekend on Sunday with an 8-1 win at No. 21 Mount Holyoke. On Saturday in Amherst, Mass., the Bobcats (7-3) fell 8-1 to George Washington University but rebounded with a 7-2 win over host Amherst.
The loss to GW seemed to take a toll on the Bobcats, as the team's No. 1 player, junior Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia), lost a 2-0 lead and fell in an epic five-set decision to the Colonials' Anna Porras, 10-12, 9-11, 17-15, 17-15, 11-6. Ariffin did not return to action against either Amherst or Mount Holyoke.
Bates' lone point-winner against GW, senior Ashley Brooks (Roslindale, Mass.), defeated Eunice Tan in five sets at the No. 9 position, in her first personal match of the season. Brooks went on to a 3-0 weekend, with wins over Amherst's Corri Johnson at No. 8 and over Mount Holyoke's Catherine Ryan, also at No. 8.
Five Bates players picked up individual wins over both Amherst and Mount Holyoke: junior Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.), junior Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.), senior captain Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.), sophomore Lauren Williams (Buluwayo, Zimbabwe) and first-year Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.).
Bates travels to the Yale Round Robin next weekend in New Haven, Conn., to take on Stanford (Saturday 1pm), Dartmouth (Saturday 4pm) and Franklin & Marshall (Sunday 9am).
