WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates women's squad placed three skiers among the top 27, while senior Jordan Buetow placed sixth in the men's race, highlighting the Bates Nordic ski team's strong second day of competition in the freestyle mass start races at the Colby Carnival on Saturday.
Bates' men's and women's squads both placed sixth amongst their competition, up from 10th for both squads in Friday's classic technique races.
Saturday's races also doubled as the eighth annual Chummy Broomhall Cup, and Bates won for the third straight year, tying the overall series with Colby 4-4. The Broomhall Cup final points show the Colby women and Bates women tied with 77 points, followed by Bowdoin with 71 and UMaine-Presque Isle with 39. The men's scoring has Bates beating out Colby for first place, 79-74, with Bowdoin at 72 and UMPI at 57. Combined, Bates edges Colby for first place by five points.
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished the 15K men's freestyle race in 37:34.7, trailing only five men out of a field of 89. Senior teammate Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) submitted an excellent race as well, placing 18th in 38:37.8, and sophomore Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) placed 36th (39:38.3) to round out the men's scoring.
Sophomore Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) led Bates in the women's 10K freestyle race with a 22nd-place showing out of 96 skiers, covering the course in 30:26.9. Junior Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) placed 25th in 30:36.4 and first-year Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) was close behind in 27th, at 30:42.2.
Bates' alpine and Nordic ski teams combined to score 375 carnival points, seventh-most out of 16 participating teams. Bates completes next weekend at the UNH Carnival, with Nordic events taking place at Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jacson, N.H.

Grossman finished 22nd overall in the women's 5K classic technique race and Buetow placed 27th in the men's 10K classic race to lead the Bates Nordic ski team in its opening day of Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association competition Friday at the Colby Carnival.
Both squads ranked 10th out of 14 participating teams in carnival points. Bates' alpine and Nordic teams combined to rank ninth among 16 teams on the day.
Grossman was 22nd out of 97 skiers in the women's race, crossing the finish line in 18:26.6. McLarney and sophomore Gracie Wright (Rutland, Vt.) weren't far behind, completing Bates' scoring in 30th and 31st places, respectively, in 18:40.2 and 18:42.2.
Buetow completed the 10K course in 33:55.5, 27th fastest among 91 competitors. Sean Woods and first-year Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) rounded out Bates' scoring in 35th (34:14.1) and 39th (34:39.9), respectively.
