LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College women's squash outlasted Williams in a 5-4 win and swept Connecticut College, 9-0, earlier in the day at the Bates Squash Center on Saturday afternoon and evening.
The matchup between the 10th-ranked Bobcats (4-1) and the 15th-ranked Ephs (6-7) marked the first time that both the men's and women's teams for Bates ranked higher than Williams in the CSA national rankings. The Bates men are No. 12 while the Williams men rank No. 18.
At the top of the ladder, Bates No. 1 player and junior Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) won in straight sets while classmate Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled out a four-set victory at the No. 2 spot.
The Bobcats demonstrated their depth against the Ephs as the hosts took all three matches in the bottom third of the ladder. Senior captain Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Williams (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) each won four-set matches on court Nos. 7 and 8. At the No. 9 spot, first-year Charlotte Cabot (Dover, Mass.) emerged victorious in straight sets.
Each of those players also won in the tilt with the 26th-ranked Camels (3-4) while senior Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.), juniors Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.) and Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.) , as well as first-year Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.) helped complete the sweep for the Bobcats on court Nos. 3-6 in order.
