PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Bates College women's squash team turned its rubber match against Amherst College into an 8-1 rout Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of Kurtz Cup play at the College Squash Association Team Nationals.
Bates (14-10), the No. 12 seed, will play the top seed in the Kurtz Cup, or "B" Division for national seeds 9 through 16, No. 9 Brown, Saturday at 9 a.m. at Princeton's Jadwin Courts in the bracket semifinals. The Bobcats are now guaranteed to finish between No. 9 and No. 12 in the final national rankings.
Bates' No. 1 player on the ladder, sophomore Cheri-Ann Parris (St. Philip, Barbados), defeated Hayely Milbourn handily, while first-year Ashley Brooks (Roslindale, Mass.) and junior Mimi Neal (Danvers, Mass.) rang up 3-1 wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Bates dominated at positions 5 through 7, where senior Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.), first-year Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.) and first-year Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.) all swept their opponents by 3-0 scores. Senior Anna Hogeland (Williamstown, Mass.) fought back from 2-1 down to win at No. 8, and first-year Jane Mayer (Bronxville, N.Y.) won 3-1 at No. 9.
Amherst (15-7) upset the Bobcats with a 6-3 win in Amherst on Jan. 15, but Bates evened the season series with a 6-3 win of its own on Feb. 5 in the NESCAC quarterfinals at Trinity.
The Lord Jeffs, seeded 13th, will face No. 16 George Washington tomorrow in the Kurtz consolation bracket.
