LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College junior Paul Chiampa had a sparkling eight-inning effort to win a pitchers' duel as the Bates College baseball team topped Colby College 3-1 on Friday in NESCAC East Division play.

Bates moves to 3-4 in NESCAC East play and 17-8 overall, tying for the team's second-highest win total ever with the 1986 Bobcats, who finished 17-9. Bates is one win away from tying the team record of 18, set by the 1984 team that went 18-6.

Colby drops to 11-11 overall and 2-8 in NESCAC East play. The Mules will host the Bobcats in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12 p.m.

In perhaps the finest outing of his college career, Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.) went eight innings and allowed the Mules one run on four hits and no walks while striking out eight batters, moving to 4-2 on the season. Mixing fastballs and changeups with a nasty curveball, Chiampa was able to stay ahead in the count against batter after batter throughout the game.

The Mules received a gem from their own starting pitcher as well. Junior Dominick Morrill (S. Thomaston, Maine) held Bates to one run through the first seven innings. He started the eighth inning, allowing the first two men on base, and was charged for both runs Bates scored, after reliever Will Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.) surrendered the game-winning hit, a two-run double by Bates junior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine). Morrill finished the game with three runs allowed on three hits and four walks.

Bates scored a solo run in the second inning, as Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) led off with an infield single, moved to second on a single to left by Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine), got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine), then came home on Rich Velotta's (Fairfield, Conn.) one-out groundout to second base.

The score stood at 1-0 all the way until the top of the eighth, when Colby finally reached Chiampa for its first run. Nick Ruocco (Lexington, Mass.) hit a leadoff single, then pinch runner John Lerner (Canton, Mass.0 moved to second on a sacrifice by Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.). Richard Newton's (Arlington, Mass.) single to right center scored Lerner for the tying run, but Chiampa bore down and got the next two batters out to keep the game tied.

Bates' Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) led off the bottom of the eighth with a bunt single to third, followed by a walk issued to Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.). Hartigan was summoned to replace Morrill and face Webb, who greeted him with a double off the fence in left center, scoring Burke and Lynd to make it 3-1. Hartigan got out of the inning with no further damage, but Colby was unable to respond in the top of the ninth, as sophomore Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) came on to pitch a 1-2-3 inning for his first save of the season.
