BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College baseball team completed a season sweep of Bates on Saturday, taking a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 8-6 against the Bobcats. Despite the victories, the Polar Bears (20-15, 7-5 NESCAC) were eliminated from playoff contention as Tufts earned a twinbill sweep of Colby. Bates falls to 8-19 (3-9 NESCAC) with the loss.
In the opener, Bowdoin stunned Bates with another late-inning rally to take a 5-4 victory. The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning and two more in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) brought home junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) in the first and the visitors added two more with a Chris Burke RBI single and first-year Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) RBI groundout. Down to their final nine outs, Bowdoin plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to 4-3 after Kevin Zikaras capped the frame with a home run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Joe Berte wasted little time tying the game as he rapped a blast over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-4. Bowdoin then started a two-out rally, climaxing with a Ben Higgins RBI single that scored Brendan Garner to give the hosts a 5-4 lead. Sean Kleier retired the Bobcats in the seventh to seal the victory.
Sophomore Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.) took the loss for Bates after permitting four earned runs over 5.1 innings of work. Pat Driscoll got the no-decision on the hill for Bowdoin, going 5.0 innings and scattering nine hits and four runs. Jordan Edgett led all batters with three hits in the game.
Game two saw both offenses explode for 14 runs and 21 hits. Bowdoin's Brett Gorman led the way, hitting home runs in his first two at-bats, the second of which gave the hosts a 5-3 lead.
Bates cut the Bowdoin lead to 6-5 in the fifth on a Beaton RBI triple and sophomore Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) groundout that plated Beaton. The Polar Bears got a pair of key insurance runs in the bottom of the frame when Edgett ripped a run-scoring double and Adam Marquit laced an RBI single to push the lead to 8-5. Joe Pace got the win for Bowdoin with 5.0 innings and three earned runs before giving way to Carter Butland, who collected the save with four strong frames of work to clinch the win. Sophomore Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) allowed all eight Bowdoin runs to be charged with the loss.
Edgett had three more hits in game two and was joined by Garner and Marquit with a trio of base knocks. Beaton and Ciummei had multiple hits for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats next play a doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
