BANGOR, Maine -- Husson University rallied past the Bates College baseball team 13-1 in a nine-inning game played at Husson's Winkin Complex on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Bates, therefore Bates was the home team. The Bobcats dropped to 3-9, while the Eagles raised their record to 13-9.
From the third to the sixth inning, the Eagles took control of the game by outscoring the Bobcats 12-1.
After two innings of scoreless ball, the Eagles erupted for three runs in the top of the third, punctuated by a Jeff Miller three-run homer run with two outs, to right center field.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) ripped a triple to the right-center gap. Junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) then shot a ground ball up the middle for an RBI single. Bates put multiple base runners on in the inning, but Nick Arthurs halted the rally by throwing out two different Bobcats trying to steal second.
In the top of the fourth the Eagles rallied to score another three runs. Husson started off the inning with two walks. Ethan Guerette then lined an RBI single down the right field line. Chris Maguire doubled to left center to drive in two more runs for the Eagles.
After holding the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles added to their lead with four more runs in the top of the fifth, including an RBI triple by Arthurs off the center field wall. Husson added another run in the sixth, on an RBI triple by Kyle Vanidestine.
Bates was led offensively by Beaton, who had an RBI single. Sophomore catcher Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) doubled, while Gallant had two hits, including the triple. Sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) went 2-for-4.
Husson pitcher Chris Morris improved his record to 3-0 as he threw six innings, giving up only one run on six hits, one walk and four strike outs. The Eagles were led offensively by Miller who finished with a single, double and home run, totaling five RBIs. Guerette finished with two singles and three RBIs.
Bates will return to Husson tomorrow to play UMaine-Farmington at 3 p.m.
