MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts University and Bates College split a NESCAC East Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field. Tufts (4-10, 2-1) won the opener 3-1, but Bates (3-8, 1-2) took a 14-6 final in the nightcap.
Three Tufts pitchers limited Bates to five hits in the seven-inning first game. Mike Stefaniak earned the win in relief, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run. He came on with the bases loaded and one out in the third and retired the next two hitters to stop the threat. Chris DeGoti got out of a jam in the seventh to earn the save.
Bates sophomore Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.) and senior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) allowed just five Tufts hits in the game. Sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) had three of the Bates hits, while Sam Sager was 2 for 2 for Tufts.
The Jumbos scored one in the first, sparked by Kevin Casey's lead-off single. He moved to third on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Bankoff. Tufts went up 2-0 in the fourth on singles by Chase Rose and Sager. Bates made it a 2-1 game in the fifth when junior SS Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and stole second. He scored on a double by Burke. Tufts got an insurance run in the sixth on a sac fly by Alex Perry.
Bates built a 12-0 lead in the second game. After a run in the first on a single by Burke, then two more in the second, the Bobcats exploded for seven in the third. A two-run double by first-year 3B Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) was in the middle of it. Sophomore 2B Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) also singled in a run and scored during the inning. Chris Burke had an RBI ground out in the fifth that extended the Bobcat margin to 12-0.
Bates sophomore starter Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) went six innings, allowing four hits and one earned run, striking out six and walking one. He departed with a 12-2 lead. The Jumbos scored three times in the seventh to make it 12-5, with a two-run double off the bat of Corey Pontes. He finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Caleb Sims singled home a run in the Tufts ninth to finish 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Sophomore C Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) hit a two-run home run in the ninth for Bates and finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs. Noah Burke was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI in game two.
