Baseball team finishes South Carolina trip at 2-1

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Bates College baseball team wrapped up its season-opening trip to the Cal Ripken Experience tournament with a 2-1 record, after losing 18-3 to Richard Stockton on Saturday morning and defeating Alma College 12-3 Saturday night.

The Bobcats (2-1) banged out 15 hits, with each starter getting at least one hit, in defeating Alma for the second time in two days. Junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) led the way with three hits apiece, Beaton going 3-5 with two RBIs and Simon going 3-6 with a double and two runs scored.

Sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) went 2-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and senior Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a three-run triple.

Sophomore Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season, going 4 innings and giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts. First-year Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) pitched two innings in relief and first-year Will Furbush (South Portland, Maine) wrapped up the win with three scoreless innings for his first career save. Bobby Jock led the Scots (1-2) by going 2-3 with a double and two stolen bases.

In Bates' first game on Saturday, the Bobcats lost to Richard Stockton (1-0) 18-3. Chris Burke led the way for Bates, going 1-3 with 2 RBIS. ABCA All-American Scott Fisher held the Bobcats in check, going five innings with 10 strikeouts and also batting 3-4 with three runs scored.

The Bobcats will next travel to play three games at West Georgia March 19-20, followed by a doubleheader at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta on March 21.
