Baseball splits home doubleheader vs. Bowdoin

LEWISTON, Maine -- Matt Ruane hit two home runs and K.J. Kozens hit another as Bowdoin College won 16-7 to split a NESCAC East Division doubleheader at Bates College on Saturday and take the rubber game in the teams' three-game weekend series.

Bates (9-20, 3-10 NESCAC East) won Game 1 10-6.



In Game 1, Bowdoin erased a 5-0 Bates lead after three innings with three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Bates answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Bowdoin relievers Ryan Turgeon (2-3) and Ben Higgins. Bates righthander Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) shut the door on the Polar Bears in the final two innings to earn his first win of the season (1-1).



Reid Auger (3-5) and Pat Duchette both homered in the losing cause for Bowdoin. Pat Driscoll started and was chased after three innings.



Senior C Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) was 3-3 for Bates, including an RBI double in the Bobcats' three-run third. Senior 2B Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Bates captains Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) and Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) were both 2-4 with a pair of RBIs. Patton hit a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning, and Maulucci hit a two-run single in the third.



Ruane, Kevin Zikaras and Adam Marquit were all 3-6 for Bowdoin in Game 2, with Ruane and Zikaras driving in three runs apiece. Steve Hall pitched seven innings in relief of Joe Pace to earn the win, raising his record to 3-2 this season.



Bowdoin rapped out 18 hits off of five Bates pitchers, with seven hitters all coming up with multiple-hit games. Bates first-year starter Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) took the loss to drop to 1-3, while first-year Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) hit his first collegiate home run.

Hogan was 5-8 over the two games combined, while first-year 3B Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) was 4-8 with three doubles.
