BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College baseball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 6-2 win over Bates on Friday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 15-14 (4-5 NESCAC East) while the Bobcats dip to 8-18 this season (2-8 NESCAC East). The teams will play a twinbill in Lewiston on Saturday beginning at noon.
The Bobcats plated a pair of runs in the third with two outs. Senior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) rolled an RBI base hit up the middle that scored senior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.). Senior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.), seeing his first action in a week after aggravating a muscle strain against UMaine-Farmington, knocked home Mahoney later in the frame to give Bates a 2-0 lead. That would be all the Bobcats mustered against Bowdoin's Carter Butland (3-3), who spun a complete game and held Bates scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Bowdoin bounced back in the bottom of the third, loading the bases for Joe Berte with two away. Berte launched an offering from first-year starter Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) over the right-field wall for his fourth home run of the season, giving the hosts a 4-2 lead. The Polar Bears added single runs in the sixth and eighth to seal the win.
Reid Auger and Brendan Garner each had two hits for Bowdoin. Butland scattered nine hits and struck out five batters in the win. Heide allowed five runs over 6.1 innings in the loss. Hood, Hogan and senior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Bates.
BOX SCORE: Bowdoin 6, Bates 2
