LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team banged out 36 hits and scored 36 runs in only 11 offensive innings as the Bobcats swept a non-conference doubleheader against Emerson College on Monday afternoon at Leahey Field. Bates took Game 1 17-2 in seven innings, then won Game 2 19-1 in a six-inning game shortened by mercy rule.

Bates raises its record to 8-16, while Emerson finishes its regular season at 9-19; the Lions play in the Great Northeast Conference playoffs tomorrow at Rivier College.

Bates senior SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 4-5 and drove in six runs in the first game, including a three-run home run in the second inning, his first of the season. Mahoney, Bates' all-time leader in hits, went 6-9 on the day with 7 RBIs and three runs scored. Mahoney set the Bates record for career total bases in Game 1. After singling and homering in his first two at-bats, Mahoney tripled on his third trip to pass the former program record of 200 total bases owned by Chris Hickey '88. Mahoney finished with 11 total bases on the day and has 205 so far in his career.

Senior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) walked three times and was hit by a pitch, scoring four runs without a hit and only one official at-bat in the game.

Bates had 14 hits and benefited from 11 walks, four wild pitches and five hit batsmen in the game. Emerson starter Kent Anderson (Kensington, Md.) was chased after 1 2/3 innings and fell to 0-4 on the season.

Bates sophomore lefthander Custer Cook (Philadelphia, Pa.) went four innings to earn the win, lifting his record this year to 2-3. Cook walked five and allowed only two hits while striking out three. Sophomore righthander Ryan Horvath (Fort Myers, Fla.) and senior Dan Bousquet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined on three shutuout innings of relief as the Bobcats limited the Lions to four hits in the game.

Bates didn't slow down a bit in Game 2, belting out seven hits and scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning, then plating four more runs in the second to take firm control early on. Bates totaled a season-high 22 hits in the game, which ended by 15-run mercy rule after Emerson batted in the top of the sixth.

First-year 3B Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) made his first collegiate home run a grand slam in the second inning, after going 3-3 in Game 1. Sophomore OF/SS Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) went 4-4 with four runs and three hits, while senior LF Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) turned in a 3-3 effort and first-year OF Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) went 3-4 with two runs and two RBIs in his first collegiate start.

First-year RHP Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) gained his first collegiate win in the game, with a complete-game, six inning effort. Gallant allowed the Lions five hits, only two over the first five innings, and struck out seven while walking three to raise his record this year to 1-2.

Bates plays at Southern Maine tomorrow in a non-conference, nine-inning game.
