LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's soccer team broke open a 1-0 contest at halftime by scoring three second-half goals en route to a 4-0 shutout win over UMaine-Farmington in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Russell Street Field.

Bates (5-7) was awarded an own goal in the 12th minute of the first half as a UMF player who was attempting to clear the ball mistakenly angled the ball into her own net. Bates senior forward Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) was the closest player to the action for the Bobcats.

Bates senior midfielder Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.) tallied the first and final goals of the second half. The first goal was scored within the box and assisted by junior midfielder Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.) in the 49th minute of competition. In the 55th minute, first-year midfielder Courtney Talcott (Millbury, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal, also from inside the penalty area. Brown capped off the scoring in the 73rd minute with a shot within the box that was assisted by sophomore forward Katherine Bailey (Winchester, Mass.).  

Beaver sophomore goaltender Mckell Barnes (Durham, Maine) was busy in net, recording 11 saves as Bates forced 35 shots her way. Bobcat first-year goaltender Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) turned back three Farmington shots to record her first collegiate career shutout. 

Bates next plays host to NESCAC opponent Wesleyan on Saturday at 11 a.m. during Homecoming Weekend; Farmington, now 7-6, will host Husson Saturday at noon.
