LEWISTON, Maine -- A sharp grounder by Bates College junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) got past Husson College shortstop George Keefe, scoring Bates junior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) with the game-ending run in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the host Bobcats a 6-5 non-league victory over the Eagles Sunday at Leahey Field.
The win concluded a two-game, 19-inning day for Bates (4-18), which hosted Bowdoin College in a nine-inning, 5-4 loss earlier in the afternoon. Husson dropped to 10-18.
Bates rapped out 17 hits but left 15 men on base in the game. Husson left another 11 men on base, but the Eagles were limited to six hits in addition to 10 walks by Bates pitchers Custer Cook (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior Pete Meisel (Newtown, Conn.) and junior Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.), who earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
VanderVliet inherited two Husson runners from Meisel in the top of the eighth inning, first-year Brett Garland (Buxton, Maine) and sophomore Chad Lavway (Presque Isle, Maine), and both came home on a two-run double by senior Danny White (Dover, Maine), giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
Bates countered in the bottom of the eighth with a lone run off of Husson reliever Sam Adolphsen (Union, Maine) on an RBI single by Hood, which scored Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.).
Adolphsen blanked Bates in the ninth and VanderVliet did the same to Husson in the ninth and 10th innings, until Mahoney (4-for-6, 2 runs) and junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.; 3-6) led off the 10th with consecutive singles, sending Hood (2-5) to the plate for the game-ending at-bat.
Bates senior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
White led the Husson offense from the leadoff spot, going 2-6 with a run and the two RBIs. Sophomore Nick Arthers (Belfast, Maine) hit a two-run single and later scored in Husson's three-run third inning.
Cook started for Bates and lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowing three runs. With Cook struggling with his command (five walks), Meisel came on with the bases loaded and no outs in the third, and retired three of the next four Eagles batters, getting Bates out of the inning. Meisel would last five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks.
Adolphsen took the loss for the Eagles, allowing two runs, one earned, in three innings. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa (Bangor, Maine) started for Husson and went 6 1/3 innings.
Bates next plays at UMaine Farmington for a doubleheader on Tuesday, starting at 1 p.m.
BOX SCORE: Bates 6, Husson 5 (10 innings)
