Baseball team falls to Hamilton in doubleheader

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The Bates College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Hamilton College Continentals Friday, losing 7-1 and 14-6. 



The Bobcats (1-3) got out to a lead in game one, when junior Denis Hogan ( Franklin, Mass.) singled and stole second base and later scored on a single by junior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.). 

The Continentals responded in the fourth inning, scoring two runs when junior Dan Hood (Simsbury, Conn.) led off with a single and was followed by firstyear Alex Augustyn (Hillsborough, Calif.), who was hit by a pitch. Both would go on to score later in the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Ben Shwartz (Mattapoissett, Mass.) was solid in the start, giving up four runs, all earned, and scattering 10 hits over six innings while striking out two in the loss.  

The Bates offense mustered four hits, with three singles from Hogan, Mahoney and junior Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.), and a double by junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.).

Hamilton starter Bryden Considine (Cabot, Vt.) got the win for the Continentals, throwing a complete game giving up four hits and striking out two. The Continentals offense was led by senior John Moore (Pittsfield, Mass.) who had four hits and Augustyn, who had three hits.

The Bobcats struggled in game two, falling behind 14-0, but rallied in the seventh inning, scoring six runs.

The Continentals scored one run in the first and third innings before jumping out to a commanding 7-0 lead by scoring five runs in the fourth inning. The Continentals managed only three hits in the fourth, but capitalized on four walks, a hit batsman and an error. Junior Anthony D'Amico (Tenafly, N.J.) hit a two-run single, and first year Andrew Perkowski (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) delivered a sacrifice fly in the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Larry Hinkle (Arlington, Va.) took the loss for the Bobcats, going 3 2/3 innings in the start, giving up six runs (three earned) and yielding four hits while striking out three.

The Continentals added to their lead scoring one run in the fifth before scoring six runs in the sixth inning. Moore had an RBI single, senior Pat McGarry (Kennett Square, Pa.) had an RBI single, and junior Jack Maloney (Cambridge, Mass.) added a two-run double. Hamilton was led by Moore with three hits and Perkowski with three hits.

The Bobcats rallied in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. Sophomore Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.) led off the inning with a walk and was followed by sophomore Dave Farrell (Chatham, Mass.), who has hit by a pitch, and both would later score. Junior Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) added a single and was followed by an RBI groundout by sophomore Joe Szerejko (West Hartford, Conn.). First-years Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine) and Tommy Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) followed with consecutive walks. Junior Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) added an RBI walk, which was followed by a three-run double by sophomore Matt Devin (Bridgewater, Mass.).

The Bobcats will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against St. Norbert's College scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
