Women's lacrosse team routs Nor'easters, 21-5

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-1 lead en route to a 21-5 defeat of in-state rival University of New England on Thursday at Campus Avenue Field.


The Bobcats (4-1) took 50 shots to the Nor'easters' (0-3) 16 shots and kept the ball in the UNE end for the majority of the game, particularly in the second half.

Bates first-year Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) and junior Rachel Harmeling (North Reading, Mass.) scored four goals with one assist apiece, while first-year Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) added three goals and a pair of assists to pace the Bobcat offense.

Senior Ashley Pellerin (Buxton, Maine) led the Nor'easters with two goals and an assist, while junior Amanda Chase (Danvers, Mass.) added two goals and an assist and junior Sam Robinson (Loudon, N.H.) chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Robinson got UNE on the scoreboard first, scoring on a Chase assist just 20 seconds into the game. Then Bates got into the act, building a 10-4 lead by halftime and outscoring UNE 11-1 in the second half.

Also notching multiple points for Bates were first-year Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) with two goals and two assists; sophomore Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) with two goals and one assist; and sophomore Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) and first-year Molly Radis (Portland, Maine) with two goals apiece.

Three goalies split time between the pipes for Bates: junior Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) started and made one save, sophomore Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.) played nearly half the game and made five saves, and sophomore Katie Smarse (Lincoln, N.H.) made two saves.

UNE first-year Kristin Schrepper (Turner, Maine) made seven saves and played goalie for the majority of the game for the Nor'easters; first-year Bethany Pitton (Montpelier, Vt.) made two saves in less than 10 minutes of action.

UNE plays host to Regis College on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Bates plays its first NESCAC conference matchup against Amherst at home Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
