LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College women's lacrosse team outscored Bates 7-1 over a stretch of 12 minutes and 33 seconds in the first period to pull away en route to a 17-10 non-league victory Tuesday at Campus Avenue Field.

The White Mules (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) received four goals from sophomore Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.), three goals and two assists from senior Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) and three more goals from junior Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.).

Bates (3-1, 0-0) received two goals apiece from junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) and first-year Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio).

Bates led 2-1 in the early going after Wagner scored her 12th goal of the season on the first of two assists from sophomore Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.). But Colby sophomore Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, Mass.) connected on an assist from senior Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) less than a minute later at the 21:22 mark, and the Mules proceeded to take a 9-4 lead before entering halftime with a 10-5 advantage. Sheridan had three of her four goals in the first half, while Libby recorded all three of hers in the opening period.

Colby senior goalie Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) recorded 13 saves; Bates sophmore Katie Smarse (Lincoln, N.H.) started in goal and made three saves, before giving way to junior Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) in the second half, when Nickerson made nine saves.

Bates will host the University of New England on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.; Colby will host Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.
