Baseball team drops two against FIsher to conclude season

HAVERHILL, Mass. -- The Bates College baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against host Fisher College on Monday, 4-3 in the first game and 5-2 in the second, to finish the season at 13-21.

Bates junior righthander Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.) gave a strong effort in Game 1, allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings in a losing effort to drop to 2-4 on the season. Senior 3B Adam Worrall (Duxbury, Mass.) had three of Bates' four hits in the game, including a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Bates mustered only five hits in Game 2 and was held scoreless until a two-run fifth inning, when junior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) drove home senior Donovan Driscoll (Braintree, Mass.) with an RBI double, and junior Adam Kayce (North Easton, Mass.) singled and scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore righthander Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) pitched a six-inning complete game for the loss, dropping his record to 2-5. VanderVliet surrendered five runs, three earned, on just five hits.

Sophomore 1B Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) hit a single in Game 2 to give him 44 hits on the season, bettering the previous school record of 43. Sophomore Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.), who was hitless on the day, broke the record last week and ends the season with 48. Hood hit .370 for the season with a team-high three home runs and 28 RBIs, while Mahoney batted .372 with 23 RBIs.
