LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on to beat Williams College 8-7 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Leahey Field. Williams roared back in the second game with a 19-3 win to split the twinbill.
Williams is now at 29-9 this season, while Bates is at 13-19.
Sophomore SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including an RBI double in the fifth that scored senior Donovan Driscoll (Braintree, Mass.) with the go-ahead run. It was the seventh straight hit for Mahoney, who was 1-for-3 in the second game to raise his school record to 48 hits this season.
First-year Jason Yunginger (Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned his first win with 1 1/3 innings of relief in a game that saw the Ephs take the lead four different times. First-year Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) pitched two shutout innings for his first save.
Junior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) each had two of Bates' 10 hits in the game.
The Bobcats withstood two Williams homers in the first game, as junior Paul Morgan (Essex Junction, Vt.) hit his sixth of the year, a two-run shot to center field in the third, and sophomore Kevin Flynn (Concord, Mass.) led off the fourth with his first homer of the season.
Williams senior Matt Brown (Danville, Calif.) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing two unearned runs in one inning of relief.
In Game 2, the Ephs belted out 15 of their 20 hits in the first three innings to take a 13-0 lead, and cruised their way to 20 hits in the seven-inning game. Sophomore Max Pinto (Palo Alto, Calif.) belted a three-run homer in the first inning off of Bates first-year starter Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.), his sixth home run of the season. Junior Sean Gleeson (Glen Ridge, N.J.) was 4-for-4 in the game with four runs and three RBIs, including his third homer of the season and two doubles. Junior Chris Kenney (Walpole, Mass.) also went 4-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs.
Williams junior Ryan Fote (Wethersfield, Conn.) earned the win with a complete-game performance, allowing four hits and striking out seven. Fote (3-1) helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the fourth inning, when sophomore Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) singled to center to break up Fote's bid for a no-hitter to score sophomore Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.), who had walked. Senior Adam Worrall (Duxbury, Mass.) followed with a two-run double.
Bates finishes its season with a doubleheader at Fisher College Monday.
