FARMINGTON, Maine -- Bates College sophomores Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) and Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) each hit their first home runs this season and classmate Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) pitched a complete-game six-hitter as the Bobcats defeated UMaine-Farmington 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday to earn a split and end a five-game losing streak.
The Beavers took the first game, 2-1, spoiling a solid start by Bates junior Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.), who surrendered two runs on five hits in a complete-game six-inning effort. Finan was outdueled by UMF first-year Craig Pendleton, who gave up just three hits in seven innings, two by Mahoney and one by sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.).
First-year Dave Farrell (Chatham, Mass.) added a two-run double and a sacrifice fly for three RBIs in the win.
Mahoney and Hood each had three hits on the day, inching both players closer to the school record for hits in a season, which is 43. Mahoney now has 40 hits, and Hood has 39.
