LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College women's lacrosse team pulled away from a 7-7 tie late in the first half to douse NESCAC rival Bates College 21-10 Wednesday at Campus Avenue Field.
The Mules, ranked No. 8 in Division III in the latest USILA coaches' poll, raised their record to 6-1, 3-1 in conference. The Bobcats dropped to 4-3 and are looking for their first conference win at 0-3.
First-years Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) and Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) each scored four times and assisted once to lead the Mules' scoring. Seniro Elizabeth Ghilardi (Norwell, Mass.) added three goals and an assist, and sophomore Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) also scored a hat trick. Sophomore Carrie Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn.) scored twice with one assist, and junior Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) added a goal with two assists.
Colby junior goalkeeper Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) had a big day in net, with 22 saves and 10 goals allowed.
Bates sophomore Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored three times, while junior Katherine Farmer (Madison, Conn.) added two goals and an assist. First-year Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) had a goal and two assists. Scoring once apiece were junior Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.), sophomore Sarah Peters (Acton, Mass.), sophomore Julie Berman (Concord, N.H.) and senior Shannon Tully (Needham, Mass.).
Bates next plays host to Middlebury on April 15, while Colby plays at Tufts this Saturday.
