Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a two-out, two-run, go-ahead single in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Bates College baseball team went on to defeat visiting Fisher College 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Leahey Field.

The visiting Falcons dropped to 27-14 this season, while Bates raised its mark to 10-13.

Fisher junior pitcher Luis Lara (Lawrence, Mass.) held Bates to one run for six innings and had a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh. But sophomore Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) led off the inning with a single down the right-field line and came home on junior Rob Schuler's (Hanover, Mass.) single, also hit down the right-field line, to tie the game at 2-2. After sophomore Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) drew a walk, the bases were loaded for Mahoney, who laced a single into center field, scoring first-year pinch runner Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.) and Schuler.

Sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) plated McCormack with a single through the left side to make it 5-2.

Junior Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.) pitched a shutout eighth and sophomore Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) came on for the ninth, earning his second save of the season.

First-year Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) threw two shutout innings of relief to earn his first collegiate win. Bates first-year starter Jason Yunginger (Clifton Park, N.Y.) went two innings and was charged with a run, and he was followed by first-year Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine), who gave up one run over three innings.

Fisher scored a pair of runs in the third, with junior Joey Eugenio (Lawrence, Mass.) walking and later scoring on an error, and sophomore Anthony Perry (Andover, Mass.) driving in senior Jeremy Marion (Pelham, N.H.) with an RBI single.

Bates went ahead 1-0 in the second, when Buckley, who started the game in right field, reached on an error and later came home on sophomore Alex Maulucci's (Avon, Conn.) RBI groundout.

Bates plays at Bowdoin College Friday at 3 p.m., then hosts the Polar Bears in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
