LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Wayne Duggan went 4-for-5, including a home run, drove in five runs and earned the save as the MIT baseball team beat Bates College 8-6 Monday afternoon at Leahey Field, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Starting the game at second base, Duggan (Hazel Green, Ala.) hit a two-run homer to left-center field off of Bates sophomore Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) in the first inning. He went on to bang out three more hits and drive in three more runs, and he came on in relief of sophomore reliever Mike Vasquez (South Saint Paul, Minn.) to pitch a perfect final two innings with two strikeouts for the save.

MIT senior 3B Warren Bates (Hammonton, N.J.) also went 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Engineers (15-10), who collected 14 hits.

Bates (9-12) totalled 13 hits but left 10 men on base, and scored in six different innings, with one run in each.

Bates sophomore Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.), sophomore Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.), sophomore Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) and junior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) had two hits apiece. Hood drove in three runs, raising his team-leading total to 23 RBIs.

MIT freshman Thomas Phillips (Durham, N.C.) started the game and lasted four innings, allowing three runs.

Bates sophomore Ralph Vitti (Winchester, Mass.) and first-year Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) combined for 4 1/3 innings of effective relief, allowing one run between them.

Bates will play at the University of Southern Maine Tuesday at 3:30, before hosting Fisher College Wednesday at 3 p.m.
