Thomas scores two in bottom of the ninth to defeat Bates baseball team

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Thomas College senior Jordan McDonald hit a two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning off of first-year Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) to lift the Terriers to a 7-6 win over Bates College on Monday afternoon at H. Allen Ryan Field.

Thomas College raised its record to 11-13, while Bates dropped to 5-10.

Sophomore Russel Beckwith was 2-3 with four RBIs, while sophomore Mike Chamard was 3-5 with a double and an RBI for the Terriers.

Bates sophomore Brian Buckley was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI for Bates.

The Terriers entered the bottom of the ninth inning down 6-5. With one out, junior Jim Pierce reached on an error and moved to second on a ground ball to the shortstop by senior Tim Mercier. With two out, senior Brandon Connors worked a walk to put men on first and second. Sophomore Mike Chamard then hit a game-tying single to left field, scoring Pierce and moving Connors to second.

McDonald laced the first pitch he saw to the left-field fence, scoring Connors with the game-winning run.

Bates scored a run in the first inning on sophomore Alex Egelson's (Fairfield, Conn.) RBI double, and added another on an RBI single by junior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.). Thomas came back with a run in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth, all off of Bates first-year starter Benjamin Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.), but the Bobcats tallied three runs in the seventh with a one-run single by Egelson and a two-run single by first-year Dave Farrell (Chatham, Mass.), then went ahead 6-5 in the eighth inning as Buckley drove sophomore Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) home from second with an RBI base hit.

Cook was credited with the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, over two innings and falling to 0-2 on the season. Shwartz threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out five.

Bates hosts UMaine-Presque Isle on Wednesday for a doubleheader, starting at 1:30 p.m.
