HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and walking none, and went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Trinity College baseball team to a 13-0 win over visiting Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action Friday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 15-7 overall and 5-2 in the NESCAC East with its third straight win, while the Bobcats dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the division with their fifth loss in a row. The teams will complete a three-game series in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
Trinity scored five runs in the first inning, including two on a single by sophomore SS Tom DiBenedetto (Fort Myers, Fla.), and Barnard combined with sophomore RHP Dan Meehan (Lake Oswego, Ore.) on a four-hit shutout. Meehan pitched two perfect innings in relief, as the duo did not allow a Bobcat runner past second base.
The Bantams added seven more runs in the fourth frame, as senior co-captain 1B Erik Paisley (Bethesda, Md.) smacked a two-run double and junior 2B Tim Bourdon (Simsbury, Conn.) added a two-run single.
Junior RHP Peter Meisel (Newtown, Conn.) pitched five innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on six hits for the Bobcats. First-year starter Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) was charged with the loss, allowing 12 runs, seven earned, over three innings.
