Baseball team loses at Wesleyan University, 14-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan University rapped out 16 hits off of six Bates College pitchers in defeating the Bobcats 14-2 on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (7-11-1) earned their first NESCAC win, while the Bobcats dropped to 4-7 overall, 0-4 in the NESCAC.

Wesleyan senior Jeff Maier hit an RBI double in the third inning to start a six-run rally. It was the 169th hit in his career, breaking Bill Robinson's Cardinals career record set in 2003 (168). Maier finished with a pair of doubles while four Wesleyan pitchers combined on a six-hitter. Starter Eric Wdowiak earned the win with five shutout innings, raising his record to 3-1.

Bates sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) had three of the Bobcats' hits, including a double. Sophomore Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI double, and first-year Matt Devin (Bridgewater, Mass.) had a pinch-hit single and scored a run for the Bobcats.

First-year pitcher Benjamin Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.) earned the loss, dropping his record to 2-1 on the season. Shwartz was charged with seven runs, six earned, in three innings of work. He was relieved by Bates pitchers Dan Cook (Sudbury, Mass.), Ralph Vitti (Winchester, Mass.), Jason Yunginger (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine) and Peter Meisel (Newtown, Conn.), each of whom worked one inning apiece.

Bates plays at Trinity College on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader against the Bantams on Saturday.
