Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Sophomore Alyssa Corbett (Malvern, Pa.) scored five goals with two assists to lead the Tufts women’s lacrosse team to a 17-14 victory over Bates College in its home and NESCAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

Tufts scored the game’s first four goals and led by six at the half, then had to hold off Bates a bit in the second half. The Jumbos remain undefeated at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Bates, led by four goals from sophomore Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.), dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in NESCAC play.

Corbett and junior Lauren Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) combined to score the first four for Tufts. Wagner and junior Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) answered with a pair for the Bobcats, but the Jumbos tallied the next three to lead 7-2 on a goal by sophomore Bretlyn Curtis (St. Louis, Mo.) at 15:46 of the first half.

Bates again rallied with three consecutive goals to cut the margin to 7-5, but the Jumbos again answered by closing the half with four straight.

Led by senior co-captain Shannon Tully’s (Needham, Mass.) two goals, the Bobcats scored four of the first five goals in the second half and trailed 12-9 with 16:55 on the clock. Tufts got a big free position goal from senior tri-captain Meredith Harris (Ridgewood, N.J.), and Corbett’s third goal of the game at 10:37 made it 15-10 Jumbos. Bates scored the next two, one by Wagner, to pull within 15-12, but that was as close as the Bobcats got until Wagner scored the game’s final goal with 20 seconds left for the 17-14 final.

Freshman Gillian Kline (Chevy Chase, MD) had 10 saves in goal for Tufts to earn the victory. Williams (2 goals, 3 assists) and senior tri-captain Dena Miller (Denver, Colo.) with three goals and two assists had five-point games for the Jumbos.

Sophomore Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) started, played 41:25 in goal and made five stops for Bates. Coffin recorded two goals, an assist and a game-high five ground balls for the visitors.
