No. 22 Tufts baseball team sweeps series with Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Tufts University baseball team pounded out 32 hits while defeating Bates College in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, completing a decisive three-game weekend sweep in NESCAC action with victories of 13-3 and 10-1.

A day after beating the Bobcats (4-6) 12-3, the Jumbos (11-4) tallied 19 hits in the first game, plating five runs in the first inning off of Bates junior starter Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.). Bates came up with a run in the second and two more in the third to close the deficit to 6-3, but Tufts tacked on two more in the fourth and five runs in the sixth off of first-year reliever Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) to pull away.

Tufts junior Bryan McDavitt (Holden, Mass.), who was 8-for-13 in the three games, went 3-for-5 in the first game with an RBI and a pair of runs, wile junior Nick Curato (Cumberland, Maine) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. First-year Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two steals and drove in three runs while scoring two.

Sophomore lefthander Adam Telian (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the win for Tufts with 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five. Junior Derek Rice (Braintree, Mass.) was the starter, lasting 2 1/3 innings.

Finan (1-1) earned the loss for Bates. Murphy-Romboletti threw five innings of relief, allowing seven runs, three earned. First-year Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine) threw a shutout inning of mopup duty.

Sophomore Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) went 3-for-4 for Bates and scored a run. Classmate Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the second game, Tufts again pounced on Bates pitching early on, with three runs in the first and six more in the third, all charged to first-year starter Lawrence Hinkle (Arlington, Va.), with six of the nine earned. In Tufts' six-run third, the first four batters all singled, with Curato's (2-for-4, four RBIs) bases-loaded hit scoring two. The Jumbos had six hits in the inning and took advantage of two Bates errors.

Tufts junior Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, Mass.) went 4-for-4 in the game, with two runs and an RBI.

Senior lefthanded starter Zak Smotherman (Westborough, Mass.) earned the win for Tufts, allowing one run over seven innings on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven Bobcats.

Bates sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) was 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Sophomore Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 2-for-4.

Bates relievers Dan Cook and Ralph Vitti proved effective in the game. Cook (Sudbury, Mass.) allowed one run and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings, while Vitti (Winchester, Mass.) allowed one hit over two shutout innings.

Bates hosts Husson College Tuesday at 3 p.m.
